Easy Fish Tank Care and Maintenance Tips

Having a fish tank is a great thing for many families. Fish are often easier to take care of compared to other animals and they are relaxing and fun to watch as they float around the fish tank.

While it can be a lot of fun to have your own aquarium with lots of popular saltwater fish, you need to make sure that the tank is taken care of at the same time.

This can seem like a hard thing to do, but there are a few easy fish tank care and maintenance tips that you can take to help keep it clean and safe for your fish. Some of the steps you can take to make this happen to include:

Cycle the Tank

One of the first things that you should do before you add any fish to the tank is to cycle the tank. This is when you take all the necessary steps to bring the water conditions up to a healthy level for the fish to live in.

You need to do this before you put any fish into the tank.

This cycling is going to allow some of the healthy microorganisms to grow inside of the tank. These will then break down some of the waste in the tank that comes from the fish, keeping the water safe at all times.

This will take a little time and you need to let the tank run for a minimum of a week before you add in the fish.

Many fish owners are excited to get everything going. They may just throw the fish into the tank and then wonder why the fish is not getting healthy.

But you need to give the fish tank about a week to do the cycling and make sure that the fish will be healthy when they are added in.

Test the Water Parameters

It is hard to just look at the water and know whether it is safe for the fish or not. You should get a water testing kit to help you check the water and monitor which chemicals are inside.

Since each type of fish likes to have different levels of chemicals inside, doing this can make sure that the water is safe for the type of fish that you want to bring into your home.

Make sure that the kit is able to test for nitrates, nitrites, and ammonia. Getting a kit that is able to check out the pH levels of the water will be important as well. This will ensure that you are able to get the best water for your fish to enjoy.

Change Out the Water Often

It is possible that the water is going to struggle to do what you want and keep the right levels all the time. You can add in some cleaners to help, but the best way to help with this is to replace the old water with some new water.

Changing out the water often is going to be key to keeping your fish happy and healthy. To do this, just take about a third of the water out of the tank each week and then replace it with some clean water.

This will dilute some of the chemicals in the water and will make it healthier for the fish. And it only takes a few minutes to get done.

    Do Not Overfeed the Fish

You need to be careful about the amount that you will feed the fish. For most types of fish, feeding them one time each day is going to be enough to keep them fed without having too much food floating around.

A good flake is going to be enough unless you have some bottom-feeders who will do well with the sinking pellets.

Never feed the fish more than what they are able to eat within a few minutes. Adding more food than that to the tank is going to be unhealthy for the fish and may lead them to contract different diseases.

It is also going to make the tank dirty and will cause spikes in some of the bad chemicals that you do not want to have around the fish.

Manage the Light Near the Aquarium

One of the things that can be the most frustrating for someone who owns a fish tank is finding a way to manage the algae inside the tank. Algae are similar to plants and they will need a lot of light to thrive.

You will most likely have lights in the tank to help you see the fish, even at night. But how will you make sure that you can see your fish without getting algae in the tank?

The best way to do this is to manage the light that the tank gets. You can manage this the best if you think about the proper placement of the tank before you bring it home.

You need to keep the light down to 12 hours or less a day. The fish will be fine with a lot less. Be careful about the direct sunlight that the tank sees during the day.

Pick an area in your home that will not get direct sunlight too much during the day. This will cause the algae to grow faster than artificial light.

If you choose an area away from the light, you will be able to use some of the artificial lightings on the fish tank and see the fish at all times during the day, without a lot of algae growing in the process.
